Forge of Empires review

Developed by InnoGames, Forge of Empires is a completely browser based game of strategy. Players are tasked with creating cities, harvesting resources, building and upgrading their armies and taking control of other provinces. This is all done through a variety of different ages in time and is in the most part a single player game, though there is the option for PvP later once you have leveled up far enough.

The game offers a different approach to others in this genre by focusing mainly on the single player campaign and it is something that really does make the game stand out. In which way that it stands out will obviously depend heavily on your own opinions though.

You initially start off with the usual tutorial teaching you the basics of how to collect the required resources to build more buildings that will in turn provide you with even more needed resources. You start with a plot of land and the tutorial then sets about explaining all of the different types of buildings on offer, how you can research more structures.

The first structures you will come across are the huts and stilt houses which will allow the population of your settlement to grow whilst also bring you more coin in taxes. Then you have pottery buildings that create items to sell and hunter buildings that catch animals for food and fur.

At the start the game feels like it moves along at a fast pace as you will quickly have managed to conquer your very first province, yet after that the game slows down dramatically. It will be a long time before you claim your second province simply because of how much more resources you need.

This is not helped by the fact that your city only collects resources when you are playing the game. This makes the whole process incredibly slow and will mean the longer you are online the more successful you will be. He electric bills could be coming your way if you decide to just leave your PC on all day and night.

Additionally, whilst it is sometimes nice to play a game that is focused mainly on the single player campaign, the PvP mode is very limited. There is not much interaction with other players other than that of the market place and being able to send people messages, which can lead to the game becoming boring. It makes you wonder why they bothered marketing it as an MMO in the first place unless of course they do plan on extending this aspect in the future.

Is Forge of Empires worth playing?

The game in general is fun, easy to pick up and if you prefer to play on your own then it could be ideal. If you are not fiercely in competition with others then the slow grind may not be that much to be bothered about.

The graphics are not too bad for a browser game and it will be addictive to fans of this genre but a lack of a storyline and not much PvP it will be a turn off for everyone else.

This game certainly has plenty of potential and it would be interesting to see if they plan on expanding it a little more to be a bit more ‘MMO’ but until then it is simply an enjoyable single player game.
